As the Kansas City Chiefs raised their championship banner from a season ago and they took the field for the season opener there was a glaring absence from the lineup.  Future Hall of Fame Tight End Travis Kelce missed his first game since his rookie year in 2013.

Kansas City was upset by the Detroit Lions on Thursday 21-20.  Kelce, who caught a career high 110 catches last year, is dealing with a bone bruise.  It was an injury he suffered earlier in the week at practice.

The omission of Kelce out of the offense resulted in in Patrick Mahomes losing his security blanket during the game.

Kelce has had a rare ability to find the open part of the field during his career.

Mahomes seemed to struggle finding the open receiver as the game wore on.  Noah Gray who started for the injured Kelce in the game caught 3 passes for 31 yards.

Head Coach Andy Reid did state that there were no excuses due to the Kelce injury after the game.   Head Coach for the Detroit Lions Dan Campbell was aggressive in his play calling and Detroit Running back David Montgomery provided some clutch runs throughout the game.  All this factored into the upset for Detroit.

The Chiefs are hopeful that Kelce will return for their Week 2 Matchup versus the Jacksonville Jaguars.
