Jimmy G. can finally leave.
The San Francisco 49ers have finally granted veteran Jimmy Garoppolo’s request to seek a trade — a move that could occur quickly given training camp is quickly approaching.
Adam Schefter of ESPN broke the news Wednesday.
Garoppolo was cleared to practice over the past few weeks but he may not be fully cleared until mid-August.
Still 30 years old and with playoff experience, Garoppolo is a steady, if unspectacular, quarterback who’d be an upgrade for several teams (Hey, Seattle) but injuries continue to dog him.
He’s also carrying a $25 million cap hit coming off another surgery. But it’s likely teams will negotiate a reduce cap hit in a trade if the 49ers can find a dance partner.
It may soon bring an end to one of the league’s longest-running “only a matter of time” transactions — although we’ll hate to see those creative Jimmy G drawings come to an end.
