Hunter Renfrow: Question of Targets

Hunter Renfrow signed a much-deserved two-year contract extension with the Las Vegas Raiders in early June.  In the 2021 season, Renfrow became arguably quarterback Derek Carr’s most reliable target helping the Raiders to the post season for just the second time in 19 years.

Renfrow caught a career high 103 passes last season on 128 targets.

The question remains, for the both the Raiders and fantasy owners, is whether Renfrow will maintain that same consistency in 2022.

His numbers may decline this season for a couple of reasons —  the first being the receiver that will line up opposite him in Week 1.

The addition of All-Pro Davante Adams, whom Derek Carr lobbied for the Raiders to sign, should take away targets from Renfrow this season.

Adams caught 123 passes with 169 targets at Green Bay in 2021.

Another reason that his targets may go down is the health of Raiders tight end, Darren Waller.

Waller himself missed 5 games last season.  The Raiders during that stretch relied heavily on Renfrow.  Also, the way the Raiders utilize both Renfrow and Waller in formations and passing patterns over the middle have been extremely similar in the past.

This season will be very telling for how new head coach Josh McDaniels is able to utilize Hunter Renfrow.  The only hope for the Raiders and any fantasy owners looking to draft Renfrow is that the consistency remains from a season ago.
