Over the past two seasons, few names have drawn more ire from Steeler fans than Matt Canada.
Canada’s offense limped through 2021 and then bumbled through the first half of this season before warming up a bit through some impressive play by rookie Kenny Pickett.
If Canada’s job is on the line – don’t expect anyone to know about it this week.
That’s not the Steelers’ way.
With the top half of the NFL’s franchises still battling in the playoffs, so are some of the league’s brightest offensive minds.
And the Steelers — a stable, historically dominant franchise with a promising young QB — can afford to wait a few weeks for a chance to line up interviews.
With Canada still under contract next year, there’s been some speculation that he’s a lock to return.
Don’t buy it.
At least, not yet.
Tomlin and company are likely doing their homework this weekend — reviewing 2022 tape and sitting down to watch playoff gameplans unfold.
And buying time with evasive quotes like this one.
“I’m not going to speculate about him or anyone as I stand here today. I’m just beginning the process of transitioning in terms of wrapping a bow around” [the 2022 season], Tomlin told media earlier this week.
And that task — and slight of hand — will continue until the team is ready to make its move.
