Bills’ Hamlin counts blessings; giving back to hometown

Damar Hamlin knows a lot about adversity.

The Buffalo Bills safety saw a primetime hit – and cardiac event — in 2022 nearly derail his career before returning to the team this Fall.

But it was the realities of life in his Pittsburgh hometown — specifically through his mother’s child care center — that led him to start an annual Toy Drive four years ago.

That fundraiser continues this week through the Chasing M’s Foundation.

“I started this toy drive years ago, before I made it to the NFL, to give back to kids through my mom’s daycare center in the community where I grew up,” said Hamlin in a media release. “At that time, my family and I could never have imagined that the story of my toy drive would be shared worldwide, leading thousands of people to show their generosity and support.

This year, he said, the event has special meaning for his family, as they give back to kids and their families, “just like others did for us.”

Hamlin’s organization partners with Ollie’s Bargain Outlet to hold the event.
