Joint practices have been around for a few years and are valuable part of NFL training camp for some teams. Although it is not mandatory, many teams do participate.
It can be a valuable tool that shows rookies the speed of the game and how game situations can play out.
One such practice this offseason is between the Green Bay Packers and Cincinnati Bengals.
On Wednesday August 9th, the Packers will be in the Cincinnati practice facility for the joint practice.
Both teams are scheduled to play on Friday August 11 in a preseason matchup at Paycor Stadium.
“It changes up the monotony of (training) camp, I’d say,” coach of the Packers, Matt LaFleur said Wednesday. “What’s great about going to Cincinnati is it’s going to give us a little bit of a longer bonding trip for our guys to hang out together. We think it’s going to be a valuable experience.”
The Packers will be in Cincinnati for two nights before the preseason game. “Hopefully it will be a great bonding experience for our team,” LaFleur said.
LaFleur and Bengals coach Zac Taylor were on the same coaching staff with the Los Angeles Rams in 2017.
They have remained close friends ever since. “I feel good about how we’ll practice together and the communication with the other team’s coaching staff,” Taylor said.
LaFleur served as the offensive coordinator in 2017 with the Rams and Taylor was an offensive receivers assistant. Los Angeles finished 11-5 winning the NFC West that season.
The Packers are also doing a joint practice with the New England Patriots before their Week 2 preseason matchup. The Packers will host the session.
A season ago the Packers hosted the New Orleans Saints while the Bengals hosted the Rams. The Bengals advanced to the AFC Championship for the 2nd straight year before falling to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs.
The Packers went 8-9, in the final season for Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers was traded to the New York Jets this off season.
The Packers hope Jordan Love will move in quickly as his replacement.
